Founded in 2011, All Points West is a Washington, D.C. based group of musicians that strives to present classical chamber music in an accessible way to audiences that do not necessarily have prior exposure to this art form. Each concert pairs both the popular and classical music of a certain country or ethnicity with its local wines, beers, and coffees for a more casual, social environment. All Points West presents their music in unique locations, comfortable social settings, and with passionate players.
In contrast to the constraints of the concert hall, All Points West loves to reinvent space into hip performance venues – whether it be a cozy home or a dilapidated warehouse. You might see them practicing at the metro or in unused public spaces in DC. The concert hall is narrowly structured for music, but we think art should be presented alongside the music, to promote local artists and spark conversation. As we reinvent space, so we also reinvent music presentation. The performers do not sit on a stage in black with ankles crossed; rather, our musicians sit and play amongst the audience, in a way that will show off the music at its best.
It’s about the music. Classical should not be presented as something inherently above. Music is made for people, it is created to be interacted with. Audiences can respond freely to what they hear. They can even ignore it if they choose. They are free to boo, hiss, or cheer wildly in reaction to the music whenever they are so inspired. As performers, we enjoy reactions. And in turn, we commit to not hide behind our music stands but present ourselves as musicians who love this music. We are eager to talk to and listen to our audience.
As passionate musicians, our group is strongly based on equal collaboration. We each are inspired by the music we present. We continually push ourselves to be better musicians – as artists, teachers, composers, and arrangers. We are committed to presenting classical music that is inspiring, creative, comfortable, social, enjoyable, uninhibited, interactive, and a springboard for future exploration. In presenting our music passionately, in unusual spaces and with deep connection to our audience, we hope to free classical music from its lofty pedestal.
